I was diagnosed with DCIS in March 2015, and had a mastectomy with implant and breast reconstruction in April 2015. Mr Turton and the breast care specialist nurses were extremely patient, explaining the options for my surgery. I had every confidence that the choice I made with Mr Turton's support and guidance was absolutely right for me and my lifestyle. I have made a full recovery with no complications - principally because I was fully informed of exactly what to expect and the time my recovery would take. I have subsequently undergone breast maxopexy on my left side ( to balance with the right) and have had a nipple tattoo as well. 18 months later, everything has settled really well, and I'm very happy with the results of my surgery. I highly recommend Mr Turton - a very professional man and a true expert in his field.

I had a fantastic experience under the care of Mr Turton. He was very patient and understanding, informative and reassuring throughout my experience. My follow up appointment was great, he answered all of my questions. I am very happy with the results of my surgery and I am so grateful the care I received from Mr Turton and all the other NHS staff at St James'.

Mr Turton has been very informative and has shown a great deal of empathy whilst I have been under his care. From the start the information provided was thorough however it was not all clinical which made things a lot easier to understand. The type of surgery I had was a mastectomy and reconstruction with implant. Mr Turton was very informative prior to the surgery answering all questions and has continued to be following my surgery. The care provided by both Mr Turton and his team was excellent.

Mr Turton is extremely caring and approachable. When you are diagnosed with breast cancer it is an extremely frightening and stressful time. There is so much information to take in and decisions to be made. Mr Turton has always taken the time to explain the procedures I was to have and is a very skilled surgeon. I am very happy with the results and the after care I have received.

I have inherited the mutated BRCA1 gene and was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2016. I researched the various surgical options before my appointment with Mr Turton. Initially i wanted the least invasive surgery because i was frightened and also worried about the post surgery appearance. Mr Turton's advice was helpful, honest, reassuring but not pushy. I then decided to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction. Whilst i only had cancer in one breast, i was at high risk of getting it again. I am really pleased with the results for both cosmetic reasons and my future health and well-being. The reconstruction looks great. I have been very lucky in that the cancer was found early -all thanks to the family history screening programme and the excellent surgery. The only negative thing was that my discharge from the ward was poor and with very little personalised information. For example, I was given a generic note about after care which included exercises, but i should not have done any because i had a double reconstruction. The note also talked about cleansing - for example having shallow baths. I actually got stuck in the bath because i live on my own and couldn't use my arms/chest muscles to get out. I think more time should have been spent going through my first few days at home as it would have been a shame to undo the excellent and expensive surgery because of poor aftercare. In all fairness though, i think one of the problems with my ward discharge was that there were some difficult patients/families who took up too much of the nursing staffs time. The information leaflets need amending to reflect an individual patient's needs and at least one visit from a district nurse would have been a great comfort as i had to go back to the ward twice with concerns. I think the Macmillan services/support should contact patients while they are in the ward to talk about how they can help. I only got in touch several weeks after surgery when another patient recommended it. There seems to me to be a gap between the surgery and recovering at home and wonder if the Macmillan team could help bridge this gap or someone could have organised/talked to me about a District nurse visit. I am a very strong person but really struggled emotionally, especially the first few days at home. The surgery was great but immediately after discharge i felt very abandoned and isolated regarding how to care for myself.
